About board:

The beginnings of meteorology in India can be traced back to ancient times. Early philosophical writings of the 3000 BC era, such as the Upanishads, contain serious discussions about the processes of cloud formation and rain, and the seasonal cycles caused by the motion of the Earth around the Sun. Varahamihira’s classical work, the Brihatsamhita, which was written around 500 AD, provides a clear evidence that deep knowledge of atmospheric processes existed even at that time. It was understood that rain came from the sun (Aditya Jayate Vrishti) and that good rain in the rainy season was the key to abundant agriculture and food for the people. Kautilya’s Arthashastra records the scientific measurement of rainfall and its use in the revenue and relief operations of the country.

Kalidasa in his epic ‘Meghdoot’, written around the seventh century, even mentioned the date of onset of monsoon in central India and traced the path of monsoon clouds. Meteorology, as we see it now, can be said to have had a strong scientific foundation after the invention of the thermometer and barometer in the 17th century and the formulation of laws governing the behavior of atmospheric gases. It was in 1636 that a British scientist, Halley, published his treatise on the Indian summer monsoon, which he attributed to the seasonal reversal of winds due to differential heating of the Asian land mass and the Indian Ocean.
